Subject: Erwin Road Compact Neighborhood Tier Zoning Initiative- 1st community meeting

At the direction of City Council, the Planning Department is initiating a new planning project that seeks to rezone 412 acres of property in the vicinity of Erwin and Hillsborough Roads for mixed-use, higher density, and more pedestrian friendly development (referred to as a “compact design district”). This multi-year rezoning effort is just beginning and no regulations have been drafted.
To kick-off the process, the Planning Department is hosting a public meeting on Tuesday, June 27th, 2017 from 7:00pm – 8:30pm at the Sarah P. Duke Gardens in the Doris Duke Center (main building). The purpose of this workshop is to:

  *   Provide an overview of why rezoning is needed in the Erwin Road area to accommodate future growth and transit investment;
  *   Educate residents and property owners about compact design district zoning; and
  *   Solicit community input, concerns, and ideas about the rezoning, particularly as it relates to specific locations within the project area that may require special attention.
This meeting is purely informative and designed to educate and engage residents and stakeholders at the beginning of the rezoning process. No recommendations or regulations have been drafted. Planning staff will be on hand to present information, listen to concerns, and answer questions.
