Durham Hosts 3rd Annual Tire Recycling Drive June 2
Residents Asked to Bring Old and Unused Tires to City's Recycling Facility

DURHAM, N.C. - If you have old or unused tires around your home, now is the time to get rid of them at no cost.

Durham residents are encouraged to dispose of old tires at the City of Durham Waste Disposal and Recycling Center, 2115 E. Club Blvd., on Saturday, June 2 from 8 a.m. until noon. Tire disposal is free and open to the public.

The Durham Tire Recycling Drive is a City-County collaborative effort to encourage environmentally responsible tire disposal and to prevent mosquito breeding and the potential diseases they can carry. The initiative involves: Durham County Division of Environmental Health, Durham County General Services, City of Durham Solid Waste Management Department, City of Durham Neighborhood Improvement Services Department, City of Durham General Services Department, and Keep Durham Beautiful.

"Improperly managed used tires are a breeding ground for mosquito-borne illnesses," said Chris Salter, director of the Durham County Environmental Health Division. "Used tires that contain dirty, stagnant water and weather-related matter, such as leaves and grass, and serve as an incubator for mosquito eggs and larvae. Our tire drive will serve as a proactive and preventive measure to ensure that Durham residents will not be at risk of being near those breeding grounds for disease-carrying mosquitoes." Residents are also encouraged to dump standing water from flower pots and other vessels weekly.

Three main arboviruses are transmitted to both people and animals by various types of mosquitoes in North Carolina:  West Nile virus, Eastern equine encephalitis, and La Crosse encephalitis. "Keep Durham Beautiful volunteers will be on hand to help unload tires," said Tania Dautlick, executive director of Keep Durham Beautiful. "This free annual collection event gives residents a chance to clean up their properties and responsibly recycle old tires."
