Durham Partners with Carolina Theatre to Host February One Screening
City Receives Grant Funding to Provide 30 Seats to NCCU, Duke & Durham Tech Students;
Post-Film Discussion Features Participants in Royal Ice Cream & Greensboro Lunch Counter Sit-Ins

What: February One<http://www.carolinatheatre.org/events/february-one-6> Film Screenings for North Carolina Central University (NCCU), Duke University, and Durham Technical Community College Students

Who: City of Durham Neighborhood Improvement Services Department and The Carolina Theatre of Durham, Inc.

When: Friday, February 1, 2019, at 9:50 a.m. and 11:20 a.m.

Fast Facts:

*        The City of Durham Neighborhood Improvement Services Department has been awarded a $1,000 grant from the North Carolina Martin Luther King Jr. Commission to help increase awareness of civil rights among Durham youth. The scope of this ongoing work by the department includes a partnership with Carolina Theatre around its Arts Discovery Educational Series' showing of February One<http://www.carolinatheatre.org/events/february-one-6>. This film chronicles the Greensboro lunch counter sit-ins, considered one of the pivotal moments in civil rights history.


*        Through the grant, the department will be able to fund 30 reservations for NCCU, Durham Technical Community College, and Duke University students to attend one of the February One screenings on February 1 at no cost.


*        To reserve a free seat, which are available on a first-come, first-served basis, students should contact Assistant Director James E. Davis, Jr. with the City's Neighborhood Improvement Services Department Human Relations and Community Relations Divisions by email<mailto:James.DavisJr at durhamnc.gov> or at 919-560-4107, ext. 34277.  Requests should be made by Friday, January 25.


*        The 11:20 a.m. film screening will conclude with a moderated discussion led by Eddie Davis, former City Councilmember and Durham historian. Confirmed guests for this discussion include Virginia Williams, a participant in the Royal Ice Cream sit-ins, and Clarence Henderson, a participant of the Greensboro lunch counter sit-ins.


*        This film screening is part of a continued partnership between the department and Carolina Theatre. The department's first collaboration with the theatre was the screening of Wilmington on Fire in October 2018.



*        General admission tickets for February One, which cost $8 per ticket, are also available by contacting Carolina Theatre<http://www.carolinatheatre.org/events/february-one-6>.
