BOCC Regular Session Highlights from February 11



Durham, N.C. - The Durham Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) met on Monday, February 11, 2019, in Regular Session. Highlights of the meeting include:



  *   Chair Wendy Jacobs called the meeting to order at 7 p.m.
  *   Chair Jacobs read a statement on behalf of the entire Board of Commissioners noting the Board "strongly condemns the recent ICE actions in the Durham community which has directly impacted at least six families in Durham.... These actions by ICE do not serve to make the Durham community safer. In fact, they serve to terrorize the immigrant and Latinx community in Durham to the point that it makes our community less safe." The statement concluded by supporting Sheriff Clarence F. Birkhead's position to not honor ICE Detainers nor facilitate the apprehension of persons suspected of being documented.
  *   The Board approved a resolution regarding the impact of the recent 35-day Federal Government Shutdown on Durham County FNS program recipients. The goal is to make sure Congress understands the true impact of a shutdown to our vulnerable citizens who receive food assistance. The resolution will be sent to Senators Thom Tillis and Richard Burr and NC Representatives GK Butterfield and David Price. Copies will be shared with Commissioners of the other 99 NC counties urging them to take similar action in their communities.
  *   Durham County Commissioners approved the Matching Grants Project recommendations and funding for proposed projects totaling $77,175. The projects include: Ellerbe Creek Watershed Association: $13,400; Keep Durham Beautiful: $5,725; E.K. Powe Elementary PTA: $20,000; Maureen Joy Charter School: $15,000 and Durham Parks Foundation: $11,350
  *   The Board approved continued support of the Durham Crisis Response Center (DCRC) by approving a memorandum of understanding (MOU) for the grant extension application, 2019 Improving Criminal Justice Responses to Domestic Violence, Dating Violence, Sexual Assault, and Stalking Grant Program. This program is an evidenced based model that trains those who serve those who have been impacted by these behaviors.
  *   Commissioners received an update on the Durham Pre-K program. Durham County's commitment to high quality universal Pre-K began in the fall of 2017 with the opening of eight new classrooms in the renovated Whitted School.  In June 2018, the Commissioners made a broader, two-year financial commitment to Pre-K expansion by contracting with Child Care Services, Inc., to manage that expansion on the County's behalf.
