Durham Begins Construction Project to Repair Dupree Street
Compromised Stormwater Pipe Caused Sinkhole in Roadway; Roadway Section Closed to Through Traffic Until Repair Completed

DURHAM, N.C. - The City of Durham Public Works Department has begun a construction project to replace a section of Dupree Street<https://goo.gl/mLswzM> between Merrick Street and Lincoln Street due to a compromised stormwater pipe, which along with the recent rain events, has caused a sinkhole to form and damaged the street.

Dupree Street between Merrick Street and Lincoln Street has been closed to through-traffic since February 8, and will remain closed until the construction of the roadway replacement is complete. The area will remain open to local traffic during this project. However, there is no on-street parking in the immediate vicinity of the construction site.

Construction of the replacement stormwater pipe and roadway is expected to take between three-to-four weeks depending on weather conditions. Maintenance crews from the City's Public Works and Water Management Departments stabilized the area immediately after the sinkhole formed. A contractor has been on-site since February 25 to repair the stormwater pipe and roadway. The cost to reconstruct the pipe and roadway is estimated at $145,000 and will be paid for through stormwater Capital Improvement Program (CIP) funds.

For more information about this repair project, contact Project Manager Dana Hornkohl with the City's Public Works Department at (919) 560-4326, ext. 30246 or Dana.Hornkohl at DurhamNC.gov<mailto:Dana.Hornkohl at DurhamNC.gov>.
