BOCC Regular Session Highlights from February 25th



Durham, N.C. - The Durham Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) met on Monday, February 25, 2019, in Regular Session. Highlights of the meeting include:



  *   Board Chair Wendy Jacobs called the regular meeting to order at 7 p.m.
  *   The Board of Commissioners proclaimed February 25-March 4 as "Champions in Transportation" Week. The 2018 Champions in Transportation Awards were also presented to riders who use Durham County Access to travel to work or medical appointments and to advocates who champion the need for greater mobility options and investment in public transportation.
     *   The 2018 "Champion in Transportation" award categories and recipients are:
        *   Passenger of the Year: LeRoy Farrington
        *   Senior Citizen of the Year: Mary Cropper
        *   Exceptional Customer Service Employee of the Year: Thandiwe Meek
        *   Excellence in Advocacy:  David Rhew
     *   Chairman's Awards:
        *   Heart of a Champion: Randolph Lynch
        *   Spirit of Durham: Rep. Zack Hawkins and Transportation Advisory Board member
  *   The Board expressed a formal thank you to Dr. Deborah Crandall for her recent leadership as Interim Director of Durham County Cooperative Extension.  Beginning October 8th, Dr. Crandall successfully managed staff at Durham County Cooperative Extension.  She has served for 34 years in a variety of positions in NC Cooperative Extension including roles as Mecklenburg County Director and as District Director. Dr. Crandall came out of retirement to lend a hand to Durham County following the departure of previous director Morris White.
  *   Durham County Commissioners formally introduced Donna Rewalt as the new Director of Durham County Cooperative Extension. Ms. Rewalt currently works as Community Outreach Coordinator for the Center. She is an experienced training and facilitator in a variety of areas including communication, strategic planning, advocacy, team building and more. She assumes her new duties on March 1st.
  *   The Board recognized and congratulated the recent graduating cohort of Bull City YouthBuild. YouthBuild is a drop-out recovery program that gives youth ages 16-24 the chance to earn their high school equivalency and to become highly employable through hands-on construction skills experience. The students have built Habitat for Humanity homes and contributed poems, stories and reflections in a book written in partnership with North Carolina State University. The book is entitled, "Strong and Unbroken."
  *   Commissioners approved the Property Tax Releases and Refunds for January 2019 in the amount of $13,041.88.  Releases and refunds are the result of duplicate listings, adjustments for over assessments or clerical errors that may occur.
  *   The Board approved a transfer of funds to support the continued taping and broadcasting of County Commissioners meetings and the County's TV Show. The County Manager is authorized to execute an amended contract with Velasquez Digital Media Communications for broadcasting services.
  *   Commissioners made the following appointments to Boards and Commissions:
     *   Adult Care Home Advisory Committee - Jennifer Melvin Pifer
     *   Animal Services Advisory Committee - Marianne Bond
     *   Nursing Home Community Advisory Committee - Marilyn Cash
     *   Women's Commission - Patti Black
