BOCC Regular Session Highlights from March 25th

Chair Jacobs Delivers 2019 Annual State of the County Address

Durham, N.C. - The Durham Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) met on Monday, March 25, 2019, in Regular Session. Highlights of the meeting include:

  *   Board Chair Wendy Jacobs called the meeting to order at 7 p.m.
  *   Chair Wendy Jacobs delivered her "2019 Annual State of the County Address." She thanked her fellow commissioners, county administrative leadership, department heads and staff for the outstanding successes over the past year in areas of Pre-K education, public safety, human services, community development and more. Jacobs pledged to find a path forward to address regional transportation challenges resulting from the area's robust growth.   *   The Board held the Advanced Public Comment session to receive citizen input on the Fiscal Year 2019-20 budget. Two residents spoke about the upcoming budget. Those interested in commenting online can do so here<https://durhamnc.seamlessdocs.com/f/ixpd78ufg54i>.
  *   County Commissioners proclaimed March as "National Professional Social Work Month" to recognize the extraordinary contributions of Social Workers who are enhancing the wellbeing of the vulnerable and those living in poverty.
  *   The Board proclaimed Sunday, April 7th as "Durham CROP Hunger Walk Day." This year will mark the 45th annual Durham Crop Hunger Walk Day. This event supports local agencies that provide food to families and individuals in need.
  *   County Commissioners proclaimed the month of April as "National County Government Month 2019" in Durham County. The theme is "Connecting the Unconnected."  Staff will provide community events that will amplify the critical work county governments perform and resources that are available in the area. Internal events will also honor the work employees perform on behalf of residents.
  *   The Board also proclaimed March 19th as "Women in Public Office Day" to honor and celebrate the work performed by elected officials who are women. Over time members have worked to break down barriers and introduce landmark legislation.
  *   The Board of Commissioners also proclaimed April 2, 2019 as "National Service Recognition Day" honoring AmeriCorps and Senior Corps members who work as volunteers and in partnerships with schools, faith-based groups, non-profits and more to improve their communities.
  *   The Board approved the transfer of $50,000 currently in a non-departmental budget line for My Brother's Keeper Durham to be used for the MBK Durham Mini Grant program to assist stakeholders and organizations working to support boys and young men of color in Durham County.
  *   County Commissioners approved members to the following Boards and Commissioners:
     *   Alliance Board of Directors - Cynthia Binanay
     *   Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Commission - Edwin Rizzuto
     *   Library Board of Trustees - Camilla Meek
     *   Memorial Stadium Authority - Edwin Bryson, Jr.
     *   Raleigh-Durham Airport Authority - Patrick Hannah and David Morgan

Announcements

  *   Champs Grant Presents: Spring Break Lunch. During DPS Spring Break (from now until March 29) FREE lunch will be offered to children ages 1-18, and to adults for $2. For more details, call (919) 560-2370, Ext. 26287.  Meals will be provided at:
     *   Oxford Manor - 3633 Keystone Place
     *   North Regional Library - 221 Milton Road

  *   2019-2020 Durham Pre-Kindergarten Programs now enrolling. Your 4-year-old child may be eligible to attend Durham County's NC Pre-K Program, Durham Pre-K and/or Durham Public Schools' Pre-Kindergarten. For more information call (919) 314-6814 to set an appointment time now through May16th.

  *   The Low-Income Energy Assistance Program (LIEAP) will be open to ALL Durham County residents until March 31st. Applications will be taken at the Department of Social Services in the Crisis Lobby #27 Monday-Friday at 414 East Main Street from 8:30am-5:30pm.

  *   The 17th Annual Women's Forum-Visionary Women: Champions of Peace and Nonviolence will be held Thursday, March 28th from 6-8 p.m. at Durham City Hall Chambers at 101 City Hall Plaza.  Speakers will be Satana Deberry, Durham District Attorney; T. Diane Jones, Chapter Leader of Parents of Murdered Children and Grace Marsh, Women in Action and Executive Director of Elna B. Spaulding Conflict Resolution Center.

  *   My Brother's Keeper Durham and NCCU Male Achievement Center will hold its inaugural conference on April 13th from 8 a.m.-2 p.m. at Miller Morgan Auditorium located at 1801 Fayetteville St. The theme is Be the Change: The Re-Dedication to Black Male Achievement. Event is free and aimed for males 14 and up. Volunteers and sponsors are also needed. Contact mybrotherskeeper at dconc.gov<mailto:mybrotherskeeper at dconc.gov> if interested.

  *   My Brother's Keeper Durham Mini Grant program is accepting applications from local groups providing services to support young men of color. The goal is to support mentorship, creative discussion and activities that help students achieve. For more information, go to www.mbkdurham.info<http://www.mbkdurham.info>.

  *   Durham 4-H Club Open House will be held on April 5th from 6-8 p.m. at Durham Cooperative Extension Center at 721 Foster Street for an evening of fun, games and light refreshments while getting to know the Durham County 4-H Teen Council.
