I was among many residents and stakeholders at the February meeting where this developer proposal was opposed and final vote delayed 4 the developer to revise and represent. If you care about this issue and its impact on tree and open-space retention in development throughout Durham, read below and take action today. Don't let the shutdown diminish our agency to participate in vital decisions like this one with our planning commission members. Thank you.

Really important news: I have just heard last night through TreesDurham that a critical change to the Durham development code is under review TODAY:
- Tuesday, June 9, 2020, 5:30 pm

The proposed code change by a group of developers asks to:

Eliminate and/or significantly reduce the requirements for open spaces, retention of trees, playgrounds, sidewalks, etc. for residential and housing developments. 

This is preposterous and, along with other housing types, particularly targets Affordable Housing. This change puts developer profits above equal access to parks, trees and open space for those living in low income housing. This change says Durham is ok with developers paying to rewrite development code for the whole city, and that we are ok with creating haves and have nots in our housing. Everyone deserves access to trees and parks and the clean air, clean water, and healthy play spaces they provide- regardless of their wealth.

The planning department and city council needs to hear from us as trees are so important to reduce heat, pollution and even criminality.  This proposal, if allowed to pass, would aggravate the racial injustices that we have seen for decades here in Durham, where poor folks and people of color live in hotter, more polluted, less safe housing – sorely ironic at this important time in our history.

This eventuality is all the more pressing because, due to Covid-19 work schedules, some hearings were cancelled and others have been compressed.  So I urgently ask you to act this morning with a quick email.

Call to Action: on Tuesday, June 9, 2020

Please email or call Pat Young at the Planning Commission to state your opposition to this private application by real estate developers.  Any personal sentiments are always extra poignant. If you write, please CC the City Council, who will also be asked to vote on these changes.
