*Inclusion Matters*
A monthly newsletter from the School of Medicine's Office of Diversity and
Inclusion.

*From Our Desk to Yours*
Dear Members and Friends of the Duke University School of Medicine:

National Hispanic Heritage Month begins next week. This month is a chance
to celebrate the cultures, heritage, and contributions of individuals with
ancestry from Latin America and the Caribbean. It’s also a chance to
recognize the glories, complexities, and contradictions of the many
identities that we classify as Hispanic or Latino.

In this issue we’ll introduce a new "Ask the ODI" series of articles that
will examine topics like this that fall under the "diversity and inclusion
umbrella."
<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://duke.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=9f0b96a218193e32d8c665f7c&id=501c7f4e21&e=6c8e11d403__;!!OToaGQ!_PX-MuBEFl01xx7rpVqHvk0yELJpOp4khcwYhJkMT1L9ijWTLTQ1EevkOJMdHUGdclpa4SflrxmN$>
For this first entry discuss the meanings of terms like Hispanic and
Latino, and share thoughts and reflections from individuals in these
communities from the School of Medicine. Issues around identity are always
complex. Labels such as Hispanic, Latino, Latina, or Latinx are subjective,
and each term brings its own history and cultural connotations. However, by
learning more about this history and context, we can enhance our
understanding and respect for our Hispanic and Latino colleagues.

September also includes the Jewish holidays of Rosh Hashanah (the Jewish
new year), and Yom Kippur, the Jewish day of atonement. As we get closer to
the winter holiday season, I encourage you to keep these and other holidays
in mind when selecting dates for meetings and other events. Visit our
interfaith and inclusive holiday calendar for these and other resources
about how to be inclusive as we approach the winter holiday season.

*Ask the ODI: **Hispanic, Latino, Latina, Latinx *

*What do these words mean, and what term is best?*
A variety of terms are used to describe people who come from, or have
family roots coming from, countries in Latin America and the Caribbean. In
the United States, two terms are most frequently used, sometimes
interchangeably: Hispanic, and some variation of Latino, Latina, or Latinx.
In our first "Ask the ODI" feature, we'll discuss these terms, why they
matter, and why many people from these communities have complex feelings
about what term(s) they prefer. Read more.

*Managing the Toll of DEI Work: Setting Healthy Boundaries (Inclusion
Solution)*
Most of us in D&I can recall plenty of times we have felt overwhelmed by
the work. For me, there were the times in college that I felt obligated to
obsessively defend points I believed in via social media, and found myself
shaking with anxiety as a result. There were the pleas from the intergroup
dialogue office on the campus of my graduate school asking for volunteer
facilitators for sessions; I consulted my already-full calendar, exhausted,
but still felt obligated to say yes. Read more.

Moreover, it has a problem talking about its race problem. Silencing
conversations about systemic racism in health care and the health care

In recent years, access to health care has improved in the wake of the
