I hope you all are having a good week. I'm passing along a new report from
NC Child. *The report takes a new look at recently released data from NC
Medicaid on oral health care access among pregnant people and children in
North Carolina. *We include data disaggregated by race/ethnicity and county.

partners. Our findings: - Very few pregnant people enrolled in Medicaid
are using the dental health benefit. - Children in rural, eastern counties
are much less likely to get the dental health care they need than children
in other parts of the state. - Among children enrolled in Medicaid, there
are significant differences by race and ethnicity in who gets access to
dental health care. - The increasing rate of young children’s hospital
emergency department visits for dental health problems signals a growing
gap in preventive care. On Latinx children and pregnant people: - In
2020, only 3% of Latinx pregnant people used the dental health benefit,
compared to 5.3% of white pregnant beneficiaries, and 6.5% of Black
pregnant beneficiaries.- In 2019, 74.1% of Latinx children enrolled in
Medicaid received at least one dental health service, compared to 62.9% of
white children, and 55.6% of Black children. *

Tooth decay is the leading chronic disease of childhood. Cavities are
common, painful, and largely preventable. The good news: Medicaid covers
dental care for children enrolled in the program. The bad news: For many
children on Medicaid, the dental care they need is simply not available -
for a wide range of reasons.
