County to Honor Fallen Heroes During Memorial Day Event

Veteran Services to Host Remembrance Ceremony Outside Administration I Building on May 30 at 9 a.m.

Durham, N.C. - Residents and visitors planning to observe Memorial Day 2022 are invited to join Durham County Veteran Services staff as they commemorate the National Day of Mourning. The ceremony honoring Durham County's military service members who died at war will take place at 9 a.m. on Monday, May 30, 2022.

Participants will gather in front of the steps of the Durham County Administration I Building/Old Durham County Court House, located at 200 E. Main St., for the remembrance event. The ceremony will begin with opening remarks by Director Durham County Veteran Services Lois Harvin-Ravin, followed by the playing of the "Star-Spangled Banner" and the recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance.

Paul S. Crews, the Executive Director of the United States Department of Veteran Affairs' Mid-Atlantic Health Care Network 6, will deliver the "Remarks of Remembrance." The program also includes the POW/MIA table presentation recognizing military personnel taken as prisoners of war or listed as missing in action.

The public is invited to help call the roll of Durham County's more than 375 active-duty service members who died while at war. The ceremony will conclude with the playing of "Taps," traditionally played by military at burial and memorial services.

The event is free, and seating will be available. Light refreshments will be provided. Free parking is available at the Durham County Criminal Justice Resource Center, located at 326 E. Main St., one block from the place of the ceremony. Municipal parking garages and paid street parking are within close proximity to the event.
