Subject: Philanthropy's role in the U.S. water crisis

Millions of people in the U.S. do not have clean, affordable running water.

The color of someone's skin is the strongest predictor of whether they have
access to safe, affordable drinking water. A long legacy of discriminatory
policies and structural racism—including the historic lack of investment in
communities of color—has created these inequities.

This crisis can be solved. Access to safe, affordable water is a
cornerstone of a healthy community. We must protect the right to water and
push for water equity in our efforts to advocate for policy change.

*Are you working to advance water justice?*

When 37% of drinking fountains in Chicago public schools contained lead
levels above federal limits, an RWJF grantee jumped onto the frontlines to
protect the right to water for everyone in their community.

Valuable lessons emerged and their insights and experiences offer hope,
inspiration, and a blueprint for other communities who seek to do the same.

*At least 2 million Americans still don't have running water or a working
toilet at home, costing the U.S. economy $8.58 billion each year. *

What could we accomplish if we closed the water access gap? A new
RWJF-supported report from DigDeep calculates the true cost of allowing
millions of Americans to live without running water at home, and the
hundreds of billions in economic benefits we could generate by closing the
gap for good.

*The time is right for funders to use their investments to strengthen the
intersection of sustainable water, equity, and health.*

A new RWJF-supported report from the Environmental Policy Innovation Center
outlines ways that philanthropies and other impact investors can use
strategic investments to help ensure that tap water is safe, reliable, and
can be used without a second thought—especially in communities with low
