[Durham INC] newsletter ads or sponsors

Several years back, Watts-Hillandale and Old West joined together to share one newsletter. There is one editor and one designer, but there are writers from each neighborhood. Also, each neighborhood manages its own door-to-door delivery volunteers. The newsletter is a quarterly affair – March, June, Sept., and December. The publication is published on three 8.5x17 sheets folded into one signature to make twelve pages. The combined circulation is about 2,000 households.

The newsletter is funded by ads that, if all the slots are sold, just pays for the newsletter. The ads are pretty inexpensive so there is never a shortage of advertisers, but someone has to keep track of the ads and chase the copy for the designer to work into the newsletter.

Old West and WHH are nicely paired neighborhoods so this works pretty well. The sharing thing probably wouldn’t work for everybody, but certainly there are other neighborhood pairings where a shared publication might work.

I delivered our newsletter and never met many neighbors. There is not always enough new news to keep it going.

Waiting past this tridemic (plus who knows what kind of new variants that might arise out of the current struggles going on in China) to have a newsletter sharing meeting is a proposal I definitely would second... Though I'm no longer a delegate and I certainly still wouldn't be able to attend live anyway, due to my lack of a properly functioning immune system (and still no idea what's the root cause despite endless investigatory tests for the past 18 months)! But I can endeavor to procure examples of the Northgate newsletter and supply input virtually if you create a hybrid meeting as so many are doing these days to allow homebound, out-of-town or disabled people to attend community activities.

Great idea Tom! Cheers, Debra

Ours remains printed and delivered to every residence in the neighborhood. We do this because many people who live in TP don’t subscribe to the listserv.

I think sharing would be a great idea! It would give us an excuse to have an in person meeting. But can we wait until “flu season” with trifecta of viruses has abated?

Once upon a time, we had meetings where every neighborhood was encouraged to bring their newsletters so that everyone could steal ideas and discuss newsletter making – that was back when nearly all NA newsletters were print editions. Might be fun to revive that. We could have folks bring their newsletters and then have a table where we could talk and ask questions conversationally.

We have print as we have significant rental turnover that may limit list membership. Also we do not wish to assume internet access.

We wish to honor the important work of translating and moved to paying our neighbors after some years of donated work.

Are you talking printed or digital? We do a digital one in my community. Not translated. Have a person who can do graphic design and a handful of people that contribute articles so no costs. The Leesville Coalition has a private FB page just for members.

Our neighborhood is looking at ways to fund our newsletter that keeps us able to have a full translation and a 4 page spread.

How do you fund such? Ads, sponsors? and for how much?

We keep our dues at $5 a year to make membership accessible. Some who are able make additional donations.
