Durham County Recognized Nationally as a 2023 Best Workplace for Commuters

Durham, N.C. - Durham County Government has been named one of the 2023 Best Workplaces for Commuters for offering exceptional employee commuter benefits and collectively changing how more than two thousand employees commute to and from work each day. Durham County joins more than 600 workplaces named to the list announced<https://www.newswire.com/news/more-than-600-workplaces-recognized-as-best-workplaces-for-commuters-21938013> on Thursday, January 26, 2023. The list includes Best Workplaces, Best Universities and Best Sites for Commuters across the U.S. who provide high-level commuter benefits to over 2 million of their employees and students.

"Durham County is one of the top employers in the nation offering high-level commuter benefits to their employees," said Julie Bond, Program Manager, Best Workplaces for Commuters. "They give their employees the support they need to get to work and be at their best before, during, and after their workday."

Best Workplaces for Commuters (BWC)<http://www.bestworkplaces.org> is an innovative membership program that
provides qualified Workplaces, Universities, and Sites with national recognition and an elite designation for offering outstanding commuter benefits, such as free or low-cost bus passes and vanpool fares, and strong telework programs. Those that meet the BWC National Standard of Excellence in commuter benefits can get on the list of Best Workplaces for Commuters and receive high-level programs and services tailored to each respective award category.

Durham County offers employees several commuter benefits, including:

  *   Flexible work schedules
  *   Free bus passes
  *   Monthly vanpool subsidies
  *   On-site showers in downtown facilities for bikers and walkers to use
  *   Emergency Ride Home program available through GoTriangle

The Durham County Sustainability Office<https://www.dconc.gov/county-departments/departments-a-e/engineering-and-environmental-services/sustainability-office> works with County employees to improve how government does business by developing policies, educating staff, and promoting the ethics of environmentally responsible leadership. It is committed to helping the County achieve goals of the Durham County Renewable Energy Plan<https://www.dconc.gov/home/showpublisheddocument/36212/637801776469570000> and Durham's Greenhouse Gas Emissions Reduction Plan<https://www.dconc.gov/home/showpublisheddocument/37816/638017110470770000>.

The Best Workplaces for Commuters program provides support needed to create and sustain an employer-provided commuter benefit program, including online assessment tools, advisory services, case studies, toolkits, web-based tools, webinars and training. Best Workplaces for Commuters represents over 600 workplaces with Best Workplaces for Commuters designation representing over two million employees. The Best Workplaces for Commuters program is managed by the Center for Urban Transportation Research (CUTR)<https://www.cutr.usf.edu/>  at the University of South Florida with support from the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT).
