Historic Maplewood Cemetery

Preservation Durham

Saturday and Sunday, April 15 and 16, from 12:00pm-5:00pm

Tour Durham's famous Old Maplewood Cemetery. Founded in 1872, Maplewood was
Durham's first public amenity. Here are buried great captains of industry,
brave soldiers, radical politicians, crusaders for public health, and
remarkable women. Here also is a story of Jim Crow, segregation, and the
struggle for equal rights. Visit the Hebrew Cemetery. Learn about the great
influenza of 1918. Our guides take small groups around the cemetery pausing
here and there to tell stories of triumph and tragedy, joy and sorrow,
wealth and poverty, lives long and short. Learn about funerary traditions
and grave art and architecture.

The tours will begin at the Kent Street entrance to the cemetery near the
intersection of Kent and Morehead Avenue. Look for the Preservation Durham
banner. Do not use your GPS. It will send you to the cemetery office some
distance from the tour area.

This tour is three-tours-in-one. We will be operating tours simultaneously -
each in a continuous loop. Come any time after 12 pm and join any of the
tours in progress. Each loop lasts about an hour-and-a-half and then begins
again. Switch from one tour to another. Leave and come back. Your ticket for
this tour is good for both Saturday and Sunday.

The last tour loop will start at 4:00pm. Buy tickets for the Maplewood Tour

Historic Beechwood Cemetery

Preservation Durham

Saturday and Sunday, April 22 and 23, at 2:00pm

After two decades of advocacy by Durham's African-American leadership, a
city cemetery for its African-American citizens was established in the late
1920s. That cemetery is Beechwood, where trailblazers in business and
education, champions of civil rights, leaders in politics, the arts, and the
church are memorialized. These are the people who, in the words of W. E. B.
DuBois, "upbuilt" Black Durham, and we are excited for our tour guides to
share their stories. Preservation Durham proudly presents its second
Beechwood Cemetery tour! Join us as we walk through Beechwood's gates and
explore the road from slavery to opportunity, Black Durham's community
relations and familial ties, as well as the rich legacy of leadership and
fortitude. This visit to Beechwood is a deep dive into the story of Durham!

Look for the Preservation Durham banner at the corner of Cornwallis Road and
Fayetteville Street. Our guides will share inspiring stories of life, love,
triumph, and occasional tragedy that reflect the history of Durham.

Please be on time as this tour will start promptly at 2 o'clock on Saturday
and again on Sunday. For this tour, guests must order tickets in advance.
