Here are two Preservation Durham events offering a deep dive into Durham's
history for October:

Introduction to Cemetery Monument Preservation Workshop (October 7, 1-4 pm)

Interested in tombstones and their preservation? Join us in the historic
Rose of Sharon Cemetery (intersection of Rose of Sharon Rd and Old Rd) where
cemetery monument restoration expert Michael Verville will present an
Introduction to Cemetery Monument Preservation workshop. This is a hands-on
learning event.

The program will include a discussion of best practices, proper materials,
stone identification, common damages and repairs, and more. Additionally,
Verville Preservation staff will demonstrate a variety of monument cleaning,
straightening, leveling, and minor repair techniques. Repairs may include
resetting unbroken headstones and footstones, reattaching unbroken
headstones to bases, or other appropriate repairs. Workshop will last
approximately 3-4 hours. Verville Preservation will provide tools and
materials. Workshop participants need to bring their own work gloves and
wear comfortable, close-toed shoes.

Halloween in Maplewood (October 28, tours at 10 am, 11:45 am, 1:30 pm; and
October 29, tours at 1 pm and 2:45 pm)

Celebrate Durham history and Halloween with a guided tour of Durham's famous
Old Maplewood Cemetery. Preservation Durham tour guides will take small
groups around the cemetery pausing here and there to tell stories of murder,
mayhem, and misfortune. We will talk about war, disease, dreadful
accidents, foul deeds, and falls from great heights. Learn about funerary
traditions and grave art and architecture. All this in what is perhaps
Durham's loveliest urban open space.

Maplewood was created in the early 1870s as Durham's first significant
public amenity. It is a garden of memories and our oldest repository of
public art. In the cemetery are reposed the origins of many Durham legends
and icons. Join us for this popular tour and enjoy the peace and solemnity
of one of the city's great historic treasures.

$15 Tickets

This tour is very popular and limited spaces will fill quickly. Register
