Conversation on DCo Thrives: Counties for a Guaranteed Income on latest “In Touch with Durham County”

Durham, N.C. – The Durham County Public Information Office continues to bring residents important information on our programs and services with the “In Touch with Durham County” show for October 2023<https://youtu.be/DPcMkgTsy14>.

For this month’s episode<https://youtu.be/DPcMkgTsy14>, co-hosts Board of County Commissioners’ Chair Brenda Howerton and Durham County Communications Chief Deborah Crag-Ray lead a conversation with Commissioner Nida Allam and County Manager Dr. Kimberly J. Sowell about Durham County’s new pilot program – DCo Thrives: Counties for a Guaranteed Income.

This pilot program was approved by the Board of County Commissioners in the summer and will soon begin the process of implementation of the first pilot group. Building off the success of Mayors for a Guaranteed Income, the official launch of the Counties for a Guaranteed Income was held earlier this year at the White House, and Durham County joined as a founding partner. Chair Howerton and Commissioner Allam are founding members.

In our first segment, we will chat with Commissioner Allam to share information about the Counties for a Guaranteed Income (CGI) program and explain how Durham County became one of the founding members and how CGI communities go from just surviving, to thriving.

In our second segment, we will speak with our County Manager Dr. Kimberly Sowell about the great work her administration has done to make sure we implement this program for our eligible residents. She will talk about specifics of the DCo Thrives, including how much of a stipend participants will receive, who will be qualified to apply for this program, a timetable for implementation, and expectations of the pilot.
