President Mimi Kessler called the meeting to order and welcomed everyone; those present introduced themselves.

Jesse Huddleston led a discussion about the soil contamination found in Durham parks. The city shared results at https://www.dprplaymore.org/516/Soil-Property-Testing. There are many ways the process could have been improved, such as having signage with precautionary warnings during testing, faster release of citizen-level explanations and better response to justified community concerns (e.g. more testing) while waiting for the state’s response, and more extensive soil testing, such as not assuming landscaping fabric is working well enough to keep the lead contained and not skipping areas with poison ivy. Neighbors have continued to organize to articulate what the community wants and to develop a diversity of strategies. There are no quick fixes, but many parties that could move in partnership toward restoration. If there are asks, INC will help organize support. One model might be what was done in Greensboro: https://www.greensboro-nc.gov/departments/parks-recreation/about-us/park-planning-development/parks/bingham-park-remediation-project.

Tom Miller moved to approve the September minutes; Bruce Mitchell seconded. This passed.
