Applications Sought for Durham City Council Ward 3 Vacancy
Applications Due December 21; English and Spanish Applications Now Available Online<https://durhamnc.gov/CouncilVacancy>

DURHAM, N.C. - The Durham City Council is now accepting applications to fill their vacant Ward 3 City Council Seat<https://durhamnc.gov/CouncilVacancy> for the unexpired term of former Ward 3 City Council Member Leonardo Williams, who was elected to mayor and sworn into office on December 4, 2023.

The person selected for this position will be asked to serve until November 2025, which is when the Ward 3 term expires.

Candidates for the position must:

  *   Be at least 21 years of age.
  *   Live within the Ward 3<https://live-durhamnc.opendata.arcgis.com/datasets/48b1212e82784e2daf4b1b9abf68b80a/explore?location=35.965416%2C-78.808831%2C10.63> limits.
  *   Be a registered voter within the City of Durham.
  *   Be current on City and County taxes at the time of their application submission.

The vacancy notice and application may now be accessed in English and Spanish on the Council Vacancy webpage<https://durhamnc.gov/CouncilVacancy>. In addition to being available online, hard copy application packets are also available in the City Clerk's Office.

Applications, which are the first step in this process, will be accepted until 5 p.m. on December 21, 2023. Completed applications will be accepted in the following ways:

  *   By email<mailto:City.Clerk at DurhamNC.gov>.
  *   In person to the City Clerk's Office, 101 City Hall Plaza, Second Floor, Durham, N.C. 27701.
  *   By U.S. Mail to the City Clerk's Office, 101 City Hall Plaza, Second Floor, Durham, N.C. 27701. Mailed packets must be postmarked by the December 21 deadline.

The timeline for filling the Ward 3 vacancy is as follows:

  *   Friday, December 8 - Thursday, December 21: Applications accepted through December 21 at 5 p.m.
  *   Thursday, December 21: Questionnaires will be made available for applicants to complete. Due to the City Clerk by Wednesday, January 3.
  *   Thursday, January 4 at 1 p.m.: City Council identifies finalists for appointment consideration during its regularly scheduled Work Session.
  *   Monday, January 8 at 7 p.m.: City Council interviews finalists at a special meeting in City Hall Council Chambers.
  *   Wednesday, January 10 at 7 p.m.: City Council will conduct a public comment period during a special meeting in City Hall Council Chambers.
  *   Tuesday, January 16 at 7 p.m.: City Council will make its final selection during its regularly scheduled City Council meeting.
  *   Week of January 22: The City Clerk will arrange the oath of office in City Hall Council Chambers.
