The Transit Equity Campaign partner organizations - Bike Durham, Durham
Committee on the Affairs of Black People, People’s Alliance, Durham
Congregations in Action, and Coalition for Affordable Housing and Transit -
will host a Transit Equity Week Forum

When:  Wednesday, February 7, 2024, 5:30pm to 6:45pm

Where:  Durham Station upstairs, 511 Pettigrew Street, Durham, NC  27701

What:  February 4, the date of Rosa Parks’ birthday, has been recognized as
Transit Equity Day

for the past six years. The Transit Equity Campaign organizations will host
a forum in recognition of this day on this Wednesday, February 7th at
5:30pm, raising the importance of affordable public transit to the lives of
thousands of Durham residents and the need to continue improving the system
so that we have a thriving, vibrant, and sustainable community for everyone.

The program will include stories from bus riders, presentations from agency
staff on how public transit is funded locally and what improvements have
been promised through the 2023 adopted Durham Transit Plan.  This will be
followed by a video from Congresswoman Valerie Foushee and live remarks
from state and local elected officials on what they are doing in their
elected roles to improve public transit in Durham.  The event will close
with a question and answer opportunity with attendees.  The schedule is as
follows:

5:45 Presentation on how transit is funded and what improvements have been
funded through adopted Transit Plan

6:05 Elected Official Panel statements (including video from Congresswoman
Foushee)

City of Durham Proclamation:  Last week, Mayor Leonardo Williams officially
proclaimed February 4th through 10th as Transit Equity Week; the Mayor and
Council will encourage all residents to take note of this observance.

US House of Representatives Resolution: Congresswoman Valerie Foushee has
introduced a resolution recognizing February 4th as Transit Equity Day to
honor the life and legacy of Rosa Parks and to applaud the many communities
across the country that celebrate Transit Equity Day by offering fare-free
rides on public transportation. Text of the resolution is attached.
