BIKE DURHAM IS HOSTING THE RIDE OF SILENCE TO REMEMBER THOSE WHO WERE WERE
KILLED OR INJURED WHILE BIKING

What: The Ride of Silence is a slow-paced, silent 4.3-mile bike ride
through the streets of central Durham. The distance is set in honor of the
43 individuals killed while biking in North Carolina last year.  In Durham,
Dean Hutchinson, age 62, was hit and killed in August 2023.

This is a global event designed to remember those who were riding a bike
when they were injured or killed each year in traffic violence and to raise
awareness of the need to make our streets safer. Other events will be held
across the state in Raleigh, Greenville, Asheville, Greensboro, Charlotte,
Hickory, and Banner Elk.

Who: Hosted by Bike Durham, a local non-profit that believes everyone
should have access to safe, affordable, and sustainable transportation
regardless of who they are or where they live. Through events, advocacy and
education, Bike Durham empowers all people to walk, bike, and ride transit
more often.

When: Wednesday, May 15, 2024 at 5:30 p.m.

Program:

5:30 p.m. Attendees get armbands, place remembrances on ghost bike

5:45 p.m. Welcome and remarks by John Tallmadge, Bike Durham executive
director

5:50 p.m. Remarks by Council member Javiera Caballero

6:00 p.m. Ride protocol and safety messages

6:05 p.m. Ride of Silence commences

7:15 p.m. Ride of Silence returns; end of program
