Dig Deep into Durham's History this Fall with Preservation Durham's Cemetery
Tours and Events:

Old Maplewood Cemetery Tour, Saturday, October 19

Maplewood is Durham's oldest public cemetery. Here are laid millionaires
and paupers, saints and scallywags. On the tour we will tell stories of
triumph, tragedy, fame, and misfortune - all in one of Durham's loveliest
spaces. On Saturday, Preservation Durham will operate three tours at the
same time. Each tour is a continuous loop that covers a different part of
the cemetery. Ticket-holders may come anytime between 9:30 a.m. and 4 p.m.
and join a tour in progress. Shift from tour to tour or do all three! Each
tour takes about an hour and fifteen minutes. Look for the Preservation
Durham canopy at the Kent Street entrance near Morehead Avenue.

Historic Geer Cemetery Tour, Saturday, November 2

Created in 1877, this historically segregated cemetery served as the final
resting place of Durham's early emancipated African American's into the
early 20th century. Here learn about people who lifted themselves up from
slavery and endured Jim Crow. Here are buried Durham's earliest
African-American leaders - businessmen and women, educators, and early civil
rights activists. Geer Cemetery is an important artifact of the
African-American experience in Durham. In recent years it has been the
focus of a significant preservation campaign led by the Friends of Geer
Cemetery. Because the site is small and fragile, tours will begin at set
times and be limited to a small number of people.

Cemetery Tour Tickets: Both the Maplewood and Geer tours are free for
members of Preservation Durham and the Friends of Geer Cemetery, Tickets
cost $15 for non-members. All proceeds from the Geer Cemetery tour will be
split with that organization. More info and tickets for both tours available
online here: <https://www.preservationdurham.org/tours>
https://www.preservationdurham.org/tours .

Geer Cemetery Talk, Saturday, November 14

At 6 p.m. on November 14th, Duke University Professor Dr. Adam Rosenblatt
will talk with Debra Taylor Garcia, President of the Friends of Geer
Cemetery, about American cemeteries and his latest book, Cemetery Citizens:
Reclaiming the Past and Working for Justice in American Burial Grounds. The
talk is co-sponsored by Preservation Durham and the Museum of Durham History
and will take place at the Chesterfield Building downtown. Professor
Rosenblatt's work focuses on the disparate treatment of White and Black
Americans in death and the difficulties attendant to reclaiming
African-American cemeteries. For more information visit
<http://www.preservationdurham.org/events>
www.preservationdurham.org/events. This talk is free.

We hope to see you at these upcoming events! Preservation Durham is your
local historic preservation nonprofit and we're celebrating 50 years this
year with a "Preservation Party" at the Fruit November 19th from 6-8pm. It's
a free event (donations welcome) with food, drinks, awards and community
partners to showcase highs and lows from the last 50 years in Durham's
preservation story. If you're curious about how to get involved in historic
preservation advocacy, reach out to me (Julianne Patterson,
<mailto:jpatterson at preservationdurham.org>
jpatterson at preservationdurham.org) or come by the event to see what we're
all about.
