Durham Reduces Part of Duke Street to One Lane Traffic with Limited
Detours

Detours Necessary June 27-July 1 to Remove Trees Prior to Street Repairs

 

DURHAM, N.C. - The City's Public Works Department has revised the
traffic plan for the Duke Street repair project to limit the impact to
Durham motorists.

 

Beginning Monday, June 20, Duke Street will be reduced to one lane
traffic. Motorists should expect delays. 

 

>From June 27 to July 1, Duke Street will be closed between West Proctor
Street and Morehead Avenue with traffic detours in place. The street
closure will take place daily from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and the detour will
be in effect during this timeframe. Motorists are encouraged to follow
the detour signs that will be posted at University Road and Duke Street.

 

On Tuesday, July 5, contractors will resume work and reduce traffic to
one lane. Normal traffic will resume on Duke Street on Friday, July 8.

 

"Because of the potential impact this closure could have on motorists we
developed a new traffic plan that will limit disruption for Durham
motorists," said Michael Hughes, assistant engineering manager with the
City's Public Works Department. "We must close a small portion of Duke
Street to safely remove the large trees that have grown under the
sidewalk and into the travel lane," Hughes said. "Ultimately we try to
avoid removing trees. We do plan to plant new trees in the fall that
will be compatible with North Carolina Department of Transportation and
Duke Energy design standards and will range in species types."
