Richard -
Hope you will join us tomorrow (Saturday, March 5) from 10 am to noon at the
Solterra Community House (take Erwin Rd, left on Randolph near Forest View
Elementary, entrance on Randolph Rd - look for signs) and hear about the
historic significance of this land.
Duke will not donate this land - it is Duke Forest which Duke
"decommissioned" in order eventually to sell it. The problem is not the
Duke asking price ($1 million) as much as it is the $500,000 in "lost
profits" which Crosland (the development partner) is asking. However, ten
years down the road, $1.5 million may look like a good buy. We hope that
grants will cover most of the initial purchase price, and that maintenance
will be extremely low (more preservation than recreational facilities).
The Erwin Area Neighborhood Group has been very moved by the generous
donations of Forest Hills and Duke Park neighborhoods. We hope it sets a
precedent for neighborhoods to come to the aid of each other in Durham.
Thank you for your thoughtful comments and work on behalf of your
neighborhood.
