EMAIL:

Please send one last email to our Durham elected officials at this final
hour:

Please vote to make this enormous collaborative effort a reality- the
governments of Chapel Hill and Orange County, the Erwin Area Neighborhood
Group, many citizens and organizations of Durham and Orange counties, and
the Triangle Land Conservancy, stand behind you now. The city of Durham has
given its implied support. Together we will complete a part of the New Hope
Creek Corridor Master Plan and create New Hope Creek Park for the public’s
benefit and the enrichment of our area. Please do not be swayed by
misleading information in our local media
this incredible collaborative
effort is an opportunity that should not be passed by
it will never be here
again. Grant agencies will look favorably on this plan to protect so many
parcels of benefit to New Hope Creek and the contribution of all of the
parties involved
in the end, our local governments will have to expend a
fraction of the cost . The time is now to make the Hollow Rock access point
to the New Hope Creek Corridor a reality!

DURHAM CITY COUNCIL council at ci.durham.nc.us <mailto:council at ci.durham.nc.us>

Please confirm your implied support from the March 24 work session and vote
to support the creation of New Hope Creek Park and the completion of the
Corridor Master Plan in the Hollow Rock area. For an investment of $25,000
per year for 3 years, the city will provide thousands of city residents in
the Erwin Area with an Urban Gateway into the New Hope Creek Corridor,
provide greenways and open space, a priority and need highlighted in the
2003 Durham Parks and Recreation Master Plan, and provide a rich resource to
the diverse needs of the more than 730 plus students of nearby Forest View
Elementary School. Like West Point on the Eno, Hollow Rock at New Hope Creek
will prove to be a jewel in Durham’s crown.

UPDATE:

On Thursday night, the Orange County Commissioners agreed to take the
following actions: Contribute $125,000 toward the purchase of the 44 acre
Duke tract, purchase another 8 acre Duke for $72,000 and take responsibility
for any additional cost for the 25 acres of Penny land, not covered by a TLC
grant. This is fantastic news- Orange County is helping to make possible the
purchase of 3 separate tracts- 3 valuable puzzle pieces that will help
complete the New Hope Creek Corridor and provide public open space.

Issues related to administration of this regional park still need
clarification. But we are confident that they will be resolved in order to
make this initiative a success for all. EANG has made known to the Durham
and Orange County Commissioners that we are eager to help with trail
building and maintenance( through the Adopt -A -Park program or similar
means) and look forward to this as an opportunity to involve youth corps
projects, school, neighborhood and church groups - a vehicle for education,
service and building community.

EANG holds firm to its vision that now is the time to act
the Duke tract is
not just any piece of land. It is a special piece of land
the last piece
designated on the 2020 Land Use Map as being for Open Space/Recreation in
western Durham County. After its gone, its gone. It’s a special piece of
land that is connected to other largely undeveloped pieces of land that
connect to New Hope Creek and Duke Forest. It makes sense to protect this
piece of land
it is only the human hand on a map, that separates it from the
others. And it is the lynch pin, the catalyst, for bringing all of the
puzzle pieces together, bringing all of the stakeholders to the table and
getting this thing done
something that has not happened in 14 years!!! WE
CAN DO IT! WE CAN MAKE HOLLOW ROCK AT NEW HOPE CREEK PARK A REALITY!

PLEDGE TOTALS ARE NOW MORE THAN $127,000!!!

But we still need to keep going until we get to our new goal of $200,000.

Please make your pledge at www.ErwinNeighbor.org
<http://www.ErwinNeighbor.org/> or liz at tlc-nc-org <mailto:liz at tlc-nc-org> .

Pledges will be tax deductible through the Triangle Land Conservancy and can
be spread out over a 2-3 year period.

Any amount is greatly appreciated!

Thank you again to everyone for all of your help and support!

Please come to one of the meetings on Monday or send an email.

WE ARE ALMOST THERE!!!!

Please forward this to your friends, neighbors and list serves. Our website
is www.ErwinNeighbor.org <http://www.ErwinNeighbor.org/> .

Thanks again,

Wendy Jacobs
