UPDATE:

On Monday, April 4, the Durham County Commissioners voted 3-2 to support
Durham County’s contribution of up to $400,000 over a 3 year period and
joint administration of the park with Orange County. But their support is
contingent on Orange County’s contribution of an additional $75,000 and that
Orange administer the trails on the 11 acres in Orange County, In addition,
after the first $500,000 received in grant $$$, the proportional cost for
each municipality will be reduced. It is expected that from $500,000 to $1
million in grant money could be secured for this collaborative, regional
land conservation project.

We thank Ellen Reckhow, Becky Heron and Phil Cousin for their tremendous
leadership and support on this issue.

Also on Monday, April 4, the Durham City Council voted 4-3 to support the
city’s contribution of $75,000 over 3 years for this regional park effort.

We also thank Mayor Bell, Diane Catotti, Eugene Brown and Cora Cole-McFadden
for their important leadership and support of this issue.

On Tuesday, April 5, Triangle Land Conservancy, through a donor, committed
an additional $25,000 for the purchase of lands for the New Hope Creek
Preserve and Park,

On Tuesday night , the chair and vice chair of EANG and the executive
director of the TLC petitioned the Chapel Hill Town Council for $50,000 to
help with additional funding needed for New Hope Creek Park. The council
will discuss and take action on this petition at their Wednesday, 4pm work
session. EANG and TLC are also exploring other funding possibilities.

These are the current monetary commitments to purchase of Duke tract that
will be finalized over a 3 year period and diminished proportionally
according to grant funding:

Durham County:$400,000, Durham City:$75,000, Orange County: $125,000, Chapel
Hill:$100,000, Triangle Land Conservancy: $50,000, EANG: $200,000

In addition, Durham County is taking the risk for the $500,000 ( or more)
that is expected to be covered by grant funding.

These additional efforts/commitments have been made: Orange County’s
intention to buy an adjacent 8 acre Duke tract for $72,000; Penny offer to
put 37 acres into free conservation easement, contingent on public purchase
of 44 acre Duke tract; Penny bargain price offer to sell 25 acres of
environmentally valuable land for $137,500, terms also contingent on public
ownership of Duke tract, cost covered by TLC and Orange County.

In the end all of these efforts will protect 116 acres of land, 81 acres
which will be open to the public, all within a high population, quickly
developing, easily accessible area.

BUT WE ARE STILL NOT QUITE THERE YET!!!!

PLEASE SEND THE EMAILS IN THE ACTION ALERT. CALL YOUR OFFICIALS IF YOU CAN.

A few details are to yet be resolved, some funds are yet to be raised but we
have come SO far and accomplished SO much with SO much help from SO many
people, WE WILL NOT GIVE UP NOW!!!

WE ARE UP TO $142,000 IN PLEDGES!!!! Pledges will be tax deductible through
the Triangle Land Conservancy (TLC) and can be spread out over a 2-3 year
period. EVERY LITTLE BIT COUNTS; WHATEVER YOU CAN CONTRIBUTE IS
IMPORTANT!!! AND IT¹S ALL TAX DEDUCTIBLE. Please keep those pledges coming
at www.ErwinNeighbor.org <http://www.ErwinNeighbor.org/> or liz at tlc-nc.org
<mailto:liz at tlc-nc.org>

Thank you again to everyone for all of your help and support --circulating
this email, sending emails to officials, getting the support of your
neighborhood associations and making pledges!!!

Please forward this email to your friends, neighbors, and list serves.
