Forwarded from the Northgate Park Neighborhood Association listserve

It is with great pleasure that I am writing to you to introduce a
wonderful initiative called the International Friends Program.
This program, as well as many other services provided by
International house at Duke University, would simply not be
possible if it were not for community volunteer involvement. As a
community volunteer, you agree to become a friend to our
international students and scholars and you are able to
participate in the promotion of friendship, cultural exchange and
understanding between the Triangle Area community and
Duke's International population.

You may be asking yourself, Why Participate?
Well, as a US American you may want to learn more about
another country and culture or reconnect with a country in which
you have lived or traveled. For an international student and
scholar this provides a wonderful opportunity to lean more about
US customs, traditions and daily life. Either way, International
Friends is a wonderful way to meet people from around the
world and share interests, hobbies and traditions.

As for what is my commitment? Your assignment to your match
is for one academic year. However, many participants maintain
contact with their matches long after the formal period has
ended.

Some things to plan/anticipate:
o International Friends Program- Community participant
Orientation
o You should plan activities together at least once a month
o US American participants are encouraged to invite your match
to family celebrations, share meals, or visit your home. These
are the best ways to learn about American life
o You should plan to attend one or more social events planned
by the International Friends' program
o Sharing of culture, language and traditions from the
International participants

Every International Friend Program participant is automatically
placed on a special list-serv (with the option of being taken off).
This allows us to inform you of other international and
intercultural activities and programs occurring at Duke and in
Durham.
To Apply on-line, go to http://ihouse.studentaffairs.duke.edu and
you can click on the PROGRAMS tab, which will take you to the
International Friends Program. there is an on-line application
that can be filled out and submitted or a paper application if this
is more convenient.

Thank you so much for your consideration. If you have additional
questions, don't hesitate to contact me.

Sincerely,
Cloe Liparini,
Program Coordinator
cloe.liparini at duke.edu
and Shenandoah Avenue resident
