INC NEWS - Dog Chaining-big problems with invisible fencing

We have to strike a balance. No fence is perfect. Invisible fences are a good, inexpensive solution which may not be infallible, but, in my neighborhood, they preserve neighborhood views and quality of life and still allow folks to have dogs outside. We are all agreed that chaining dogs, while the "surest" restraint solution, still does not prevent children from being mauled and is surely the least humane for dogs.

Cheers -

Invisible fencing leaves the "fenced" dog open to attack or in the case of an unchained - inadequately socialized dog someone cutting across the dog's yard is open to attack. Some dogs can and do jump high enough to avoid the shock; some are chased out of yard or tempted beyond the pain of shock , thus getting hit by car. Electric fences by themselves are inadequate. Why not just raise money to buy invisible fences? They seem to work very well ...

In reference to the “material” part of your request, Ken, I wanted to let everyone know what the Coalition is up to. We have been raising funds to help build fences for people in the community who currently chain their dogs. We are putting up our first fence this Sunday over on Cherry Grove Street. We have another going up at the end of March on S. Buchanan and a couple more to follow hopefully in April. We are continuously working to raise more funds to build more fences and hope more folks will join in this effort with us.

      Thanks,
      Amanda

This story brings up some interesting points about the practice of chaining dogs. See the link below.

As a new real estate agent, sometimes my little boy will come with me to do different things (take photos, drop off papers, etc.) in all kinds of neighborhoods in Durham.

Given this recent attack by a chained dog, my wife is now nervous about this practice in neighborhoods where dog chaining is prevalent. I will admit that I am as well.

Fear is healthy as long as you don't allow it to take over your life. But, she does bring up a good point. If one set of parents is afraid to let their boy going into a neighborhood with lots of dogs on chains, try selling a home in this same neighborhood.

I love dogs. I believe that the practice of chaining up a dog is not the right thing to do.

I also believe that for our most disadvantaged neighborhoods to revitalize, these neighborhoods need investment dollars. Dogs tied everywhere, at the end of a steel chain, is not a sign of a healthy neighborhood. Bye, bye investment dollars.

Please support our county's animal control officers by supporting measures that will give them the tools, both material and legal, that they need to end the practice of chaining dogs in Durham.
