Forum to dispel revolving door myth will be from 7-9 p.m.
Rogers-Herr Middle School at 911 Cornwallis Road
Two judges, a magistrate, the district attorney, a bail bondsman and others will field questions from the public in an attempt to prove they have community safety at heart and are not in the business of coddling robbers, rapists and murderers.
Court officials hope it will be a two-way street in terms of information sharing.
1. On one hand, the public will learn how the judicial system works.
2. On the other, court officials may hear comments that could help them revise local bail-bonding guidelines for the first time in at least six years.
Chief District Judge Elaine Bushfan has great expectations for this forum.

ACCREDITATION ASSESSMENT TEAM INVITES PUBLIC COMMENT
The Durham Police Department is scheduled for an on-site assessment April 21 – 25, 2007 as part of a program to achieve national accreditation status. A team of assessors from the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. (CALEA) will arrive Saturday, April 21, to examine all aspects of the Durham Police Department’s policy and procedures, management, operations and support services. Verification by the CALEA team that the Durham Police Department meets the Commission’s standards is a voluntary process to gain re-accreditation, a highly prized recognition of law enforcement professional excellence.

As part of the on-site assessment, agency employees and members of the community are invited to offer comments at a public information session on Monday, April 23 at 7:00 p.m. in the City Council Chambers at Durham City Hall, 101 City Hall Plaza. If for some reason an individual cannot speak at the public information session but would still like to provide comments to the assessment team, he/she may do so by calling (919) 560-4594 on Tuesday, April 24 between 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m.

For information, call Monica Tucker, Accreditation Manager, at (919) 560-4581. Persons wishing to offer written comments about the Durham Police Department's ability to meet the standards for accreditation are asked to write: Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc., 10302 Eaton Place, Suite 100, Fairfax, VA 22030-2215

Once CALEA Assessors complete their review of the agency, they report back to the full Commission, which will then decide if the agency is to be granted re-accredited status.
For information about the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc., write to 10302 Eaton Place, Suite 100 Fairfax, Virginia, 22030-2215; or call (800)368-3757 or visit www.calea.org.
