Letter: Warehouse inappropriate for Turnage Heights
Herald-Sun, 2 November 2007

I am writing to briefly respond to the "Store owners
tell their side" article by Ralph and Susan Brackett
on Oct. 24.

We in Turnage Heights who oppose the D&L Parts store
and warehouse construction, appreciate the Mrs.
Bracketts' dilemma and we hope their business stays in
Durham and thrives here. However, there are
appropriate places in Durham for a 13,000-square-foot,
corrugated steel structure; this residential
neighborhood is simply not appropriate for the scale
and nature of D&L's proposed business. We encourage
readers to drive by 608 Morreene Road and imagine this
structure popping up in front their home.

We understand the difficulty of the Bracketts'
position -- the city did approve (erroneously) their
site plan. But we wonder why they are so taken aback
by our opposition. First, it is very late in the game
for them to be reaching out to neighbors. Second, no
sane homeowners would willingly agree to this
industrial monstrosity in their neighborhood. We doubt
the Bracketts would be happy about it in front of
their own home.

We do hope that some solution will be found to this
whole debacle with the least amount of ill will.

In line with this, we do not appreciate the threat of
late night "convenience stores" or "night clubs."
Having now become organized, our neighborhood will
very strongly and successfully oppose any such
establishments that do not "satisfy the needs" of our
neighborhood, as the UDO zoning ordinance mandates.
