INC NEWS - drought and streets

As I understand it, most of Durham is built on 'expansive' clay. When it is
wet, it expands. When it is dry, it contracts.
>From my McGraw-Hill Portable Engineering Foundation Repair Manual, I read
that a moisture change of as small as 4% can result in the ground swelling
by as much as 1-1/4 inches. Perhaps the drought is responsible? The book
goes on to recommends "wetting" areas of your foundation that begin to drop
during a dry spell. It does not discuss what to do during times of imposed
water restrictions?

Subject: INC NEWS - drought and streets
While out walking, I have been noticing that some of streets and roads
seem to have a lot more cracks than they used to (maybe it is just wear and
tear from construction in the area?)
It also seems like there are a couple places on freeways where you go over
an overpass and then there is a big dip in the road (maybe it has always
been there and my shocks are worse?)
Can the drought be causing enough shrinking of ground to affect roads
built on it?
Regards, pat
