Green Durham Photography Competition Now Accepting Entries

Deadline to Submit Photos April 8; Winners Displayed During Durham's Earth Day Festival April 25

 

Durham, N.C. - Durham enthusiasts with a love for photography can now show their skills behind the camera and the unique environment that is Durham in the first-ever Green Durham Photography Competition.

 

To help celebrate April as Earth Month, the Durham City-County Sustainability Office, Durham Parks and Recreation, and Keep Durham Beautiful, Inc. are hosting the competition, where all of the winning entries, including the grand prize winner, will be displayed during the Durham Earth Day Festival on Saturday, April 25, 2009, in the CCB Plaza in downtown Durham.  

 

Competition organizers are seeking striking photographs of both natural and built environments in seven categories: wildlife, plants, natural habitat, connecting people and nature, built environment, alternative transportation, and altered nature. The submission deadline for the competition is Wednesday, April 8.  Submissions from amateur and professional photographers will be judged separately and the winners in each category will be notified by April 20. The photographs will be displayed the final two weeks of April at the Blue Coffee Café, located at 202 N. Corcoran Street in downtown Durham.  All of the winning entries in each category will be printed for the Durham Earth Day Festival display by CCI Photographics and framed by the TROSA Frame Shop. Through This Lens is providing the grand prize, which will be a framed copy of the winning photograph.

 

The photography competition is just one of the many events taking place during April, which the City and County are designating as Earth Month in Durham.  While the City has hosted the Durham Earth Day Festival for many years, this is the first time Durham has designated the entire month of April as Earth Month.  Month-long activities include stream cleanups, environmentally-themed story times, art exhibits, tours of green buildings and the Triangle Waste Water Treatment Plant, a slide show of local natural areas, and much more.
