Fast Facts:
* The Joint City-County Planning Committee (JCCPC) is
considering possible changes to Durham's Unified Development Ordinance
(UDO) to better manage the impacts of development on the community's
environment, yet not unduly hinder the growth and development that
Durham needs to retain its economic vitality.
* This open house is an opportunity for Durham citizens to
review the recommendations of the EEUDO Steering Committee, ask
questions as well as provide feedback and suggestions directly to both
the committee members and the City-County Planning Department staff.
o The JCCPC established the EEUDO Steering Committee to work with the
City-County Planning Department to investigate possible UDO revisions.
Co-chaired by City Councilman Mike Woodard and County Commissioner Ellen
Reckhow, the members represent a variety of points of view, from
developers to environmental scientists to neighborhood activists.
* The JCCPC is focusing its attention on four aspects of
environmental regulation: Sedimentation and Erosion Control, Water
Quality/Stream Buffers, Site Preparation, and Tree
Preservation/Protection.
o These four aspects are under review since degradation of the
environment due to development can take a variety of forms, such as
runoff and sedimentation, grading, tree clearing, loss of open space,
and increased impervious surfaces.
* The EEUDO Steering Committee report will be reviewed by the
JCCPC at its meeting on Wednesday, June 3, 2009. The JCCPC will then
direct City-County Planning Department staff on which policies should
move forward as text amendments to the UDO.
* For more information, or to review the current set of
recommendations that will be presented at next week's Open House, visit
the City's Web site at
www.durhamnc.gov/departments/planning/pdf/eeudo_summary051109.pdf.
* Feedback may also be submitted to Aaron Cain, senior planner
with the Durham City/County Planning Department, at (919) 560-4137,
extension 226 or via e-mail at aaron.cain at durhamnc.gov.
