Durham Begins Replacement Phase of Automated Meter Reading Project

Contractor Starts Water Meter Replacements This Week

DURHAM, N.C. - Beginning this week, Durham residents living north of
Interstate 85 may see the City of Durham's contractor working on
neighborhood streets as Durham begins replacing water meters as part of
its Automated Meter Reading (AMR) project.

Vanguard Utility Services will have four, one-man crews working in
neighborhoods as the City transitions to its new automated meter reading
system. During the next four weeks, crews will be working north of
Interstate 85, along Guess Road, Duke Homestead, Carver Street, East
Club Boulevard and North Roxboro Road as well as additional streets in
this area.

Existing meters will be removed and replaced with meters that will
provide radio-read signals to laptops used by meter readers in the
field. In this phase of the project, 20,000 meters are scheduled for
replacement. As more of the automated meters are in place, the City
anticipates transitioning to monthly reading for customers.

Employees of Vanguard will be driving company trucks with appropriate
signage and crew members will be wearing company uniforms or shirts and
have company identification.

The City's Department of Water Management will provide updates on the
project as the replacement process continues. For additional
information about the AMR project, contact Vicki Westbrook, deputy
director of the City's Department of Water Management, at (919)
560-4381, ext. 35266 or via e-mail at Vicki.Westbrook at durhamnc.gov.
