Durham Lake Levels Increase Significantly

Both Water Supply Lakes Refill Substantially Thanks to Recent Rainfall

DURHAM, N.C. - Thanks to a series of rain events this week, both of the
City of Durham's supply lakes have substantially refilled.

Lake Michie is full with water currently flowing over the dam. Little
River Lake had risen three feet in the last 24 hours, and with
additional rain projected next week, the City's Department of Water
Management anticipates that it could completely refill by the end of
next week.

Also, cooler temperatures have helped to decrease the demand on the
lakes, lowering the usage over the past seven days by 3.5 million
gallons per day as compared to the previous seven days.

Based on the current water supply status, City Manager Thomas Bonfield
announced that the City will continue with the alternate-day irrigation
schedule and resume issuing temporary watering licenses. "I am pleased
that drought conditions, both statewide and locally, have significantly
improved which allows us to remain in our current alternate-day
schedule," Bonfield said. "City staff will continue to monitor
conditions and encourage customers to continue using water-efficient
practices that extend the City's water supply."
