DURHAM, N.C. - The following highlights from the January 3, 2011 Durham
City Council meeting and other topics of interest will be featured in
the upcoming episode of "City Hall This Week." The show will begin
airing on Friday, January 7 at 8 p.m. and will also be available to
watch on-demand at www.DurhamNC.gov/DTV8/CityHallThisWeek.cfm.

City's Urban Growth Area Now Includes Site of Proposed Mixed Use
Property

The site of a proposed mixed use property in southwest Durham County is
now included in Durham's Urban Growth Area. After receiving input during
a public hearing, the City Council approved extending the Urban Growth
Boundary to include the proposed site of the 751 Assemblage. Project
developer Southern Durham Development Inc. wants to build the
development west of the Fayetteville Road and Highway 751 intersection,
which is outside of the city limits. The boundary change is the first of
four steps that would have to be taken by the City before the project
could move forward. The other three are the approval of a water and
sewer agreement, annexation, and a decision on how the site should be
zoned.

City Hall Plaza Street Improvements Project Ready to Move Forward

A significant improvement project for the plaza in front of City Hall is
about to get under way. The City Council approved a $995,439 contract
for water line installation, storm drainage, curb and gutter
construction, and paving. The contract also includes landscaping and a
new American with Disabilities Act compliant design entrance for City
Hall Plaza. The project is being paid for in part with 2005 and 2007
bond funds.

City Ramps Up Residential Energy Efficiency Improvement Project for 2011

The City is ramping up its already extensive efforts to support the
Neighborhood Energy Retrofit Program. The program is using federal funds
to help make homes in entire neighborhoods more energy efficient.
Because the program's goals are so extensive, Clean Energy Durham has
been serving as the project manager for the neighborhood outreach
portion of the project. That organization's responsibilities are now
being expanded through a $31,540 contract amendment. City/County
Sustainability Office Manager Tobin Freid explains more about what the
program is and why the contract amendment was needed on the upcoming
episode of "City Hall This Week."

Other interviews featured on upcoming episode of "City Hall This Week":

* Transportation Department Assistant Director Wesley Parham -
Explains how you can learn more about a major road widening project for
part of Highway 751.

* Durham Parks and Recreation Senior Planner Rosetta Radtke -
Explains how the City is breathing new life into an important feature at
Campus Hills Park.
