Durham Hosts Free Paper Shredding, E-Waste, and Christmas Tree Recycling
January 22

Free Waste Reduction Event Open to Durham Residents and Businesses

DURHAM, N.C. - Once again, the City of Durham is offering a free Paper
Shredding and E-Waste Recycling Event for residents and businesses to
safely dispose of electronics, documents, and Christmas trees.

The next chance for residents to safely dispose of their old computers,
printers, monitors, televisions, cell phones, and nearly anything else
with electronic components is coming up on Saturday, January 22 from 9
a.m. to 3 p.m. The event, co-sponsored with Sonoco Recycling, Shimar
Recycling, and Synergy Recycling, will be held at the Durham Plaza
Shopping Center in the old K-Mart parking lot, located at 2000 Avondale
Drive, Durham.

"At the last E-Waste event, more than 1,500 recyclers came out to
properly dispose of nearly 37 tons of unwanted electronics and 21 tons
of paper," said Donald Long, director of the City's Solid Waste
Management Department. "Since 2005, the City of Durham has collected
more than 60,000 tons of electronics, paper, and other recyclable goods,
helping to reduce waste and keep toxic materials out of landfills and
incinerators," Long added.

The City will accept nearly all electronic devices with a cord,
including:

* Computers, laptops, keyboards, mouse, printers, monitors,
speakers, copiers, scanners, circuit boards, hard drives, computer
parts, etc.

* Televisions, stereo equipment, tape players, receivers,
amplifiers, record players, etc.

* Kitchen electronics, such as microwaves, mixers, blenders,
choppers, etc.

* Telephones, cell phones, and fax machines

* Hair dryers, curling irons, alarm clocks, and vacuum cleaners

* Power tools, cordless tools, etc.

* Electronic toys, such as keyboards and video game systems

This event will not accept large appliances, refrigerators, air
conditioners, or any other appliances that contain Freon.

Free confidential paper shredding will also be provided on site. Paper
may contain paper clips and staples; however, hanging file folders will
not be accepted.

Christmas trees will also be accepted at this event. Trees taller than
six feet should be cut in half. Residents should also remove all
decorations, including tinsel, lights, garland, and ornaments, as well
as stands, nails, and other hardware.

According to Larrisha McGill, waste reduction coordinator for the City's
Solid Waste Management Department, residents won't even have to leave
their vehicles to unload all of their old electronics and papers. "We
will have staff on hand to unload these items, so we hope residents will
take advantage of this free opportunity to keep these items out of our
landfills," McGill said.

Durham residents and businesses who can't make this event can still
safely and conveniently recycle their old electronics at the City's
Household Hazardous Waste Facility. The facility, located at 1900 E.
Club Boulevard., is open Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m.
and Thursdays through Saturdays from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.
