From the DARE listserv:
So the charter school bill passed the full Education Committee as presented out
of the subcommittee; all in less than an hour. Senator Graham offered an
amendment that would have created a weighted lottery system such that the
charters could reflect the diversity of the community. It also included
language to strengthen the possibility that the charters provide transportation
and lunch – it was voted down. Our own Senator McKissick had 6 friendly
amendments –he was never recognized by the chair.
The bill now goes to the Senate floor where it will most likely
pass. Then it goes to the House, perhaps to subcommittee but more likely to
full committee. We should continue to share our concerns with our House
delegation, and the members of the House Education committee.
