Durham Reopens West Markham Avenue After Culvert Replacement

City Reopens Street to Thru Traffic After One-Year Closure

DURHAM, N.C.- The City of Durham's Public Works Department reopened West
Markham Avenue to thru traffic today. The South Ellerbe Creek Trail,
which was temporarily detoured during construction, is also now open to
pedestrians and bicyclists.

According to the department, the culvert that allows South Ellerbe Creek
to flow underneath West Markham Avenue began to rapidly deteriorate in
2009. The roadway was deemed unsafe for vehicular traffic and closed in
early 2010.

The new culvert and enhancements will improve the stability of the
stream, wildlife habitat, and water quality within South Ellerbe Creek.
The project included extensive design, permitting, and construction,
which was required to meet Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA)
floodplain regulations, address stream buffer requirements, and minimize
stream impacts.
