Durham Hosts Eastway Elementary "Green Day" April 28
Northeast Central Durham Livability Initiative Continues to Enhance
Open, Green Spaces
DURHAM, N.C. - Students of Durham's Eastway Elementary School are
getting another day full of activities designed to create open, green
spaces in Northeast Central Durham.
Eastway Elementary School's "Green Day" will be held on Thursday, April
28, 2011, at 610 N. Alston Ave., from 8:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m.
Students, volunteers, teachers, City of Durham staff, and neighborhood
residents will participate in activities that include planting seven
raised-garden beds, a cleanup of Goose Creek, and classroom instruction
on the ecological system.
This event is being coordinated by the City's Neighborhood Improvement
Services Department, which adopted Eastway Elementary School as part of
the Northeast Central Durham Livability Initiative. The initiative is a
collaborative effort between the department, Eastway Elementary School,
Asbury Temple United Methodist Church, the U.S. Environmental Protection
Agency, and North Carolina Central University. The overarching goal of
the Northeast Central Durham Livability Initiative is to create a
school/community garden, a healthy environment, and address the
challenges of sustaining a healthy life style.
To support Eastway Elementary School's Green Day, Asbury Temple United
Methodist Church made a $500 donation toward the seven raised-garden
beds. Keep Durham Beautiful, Inc. is supplying complimentary materials
for the Goose Creek cleanup.
The Eastway Elementary School Green Day is the third event coordinated
through this initiative for the school. The first event was a tree
planting in January followed by a flower bulb planting in March. The
Northeast Central Durham Livability Initiative directly supports making
Durham a place with thriving, livable neighborhoods as defined in goal
three of the City's new Strategic Plan.
For additional information on this project or on-site assistance at the
event, contact Robin Dixon with the City's Neighborhood Improvement
Services Department, at (919) 560-1647, ext. 34245 or via e-mail at
Robin.Dixon at DurhamNC.gov.
