Durham County Library Hosts Author Talk & Book Discussion
The Passion of Tiger Woods: An Anthropologist Reports on Golf, Race and Celebrity

Date: Saturday, January 28
Time: 3 p.m.

Cost: Free and open to the public

About: Dr. Orin Starn, professor and chair of Cultural Anthropology at Duke University, will host a reading from his book, The Passion of Tiger Woods: An Anthropologist Reports on Golf, Race and Celebrity Scandal. Starn looks into the life of Tiger Woods, a flawed yet riveting figure, who remains among the most famous athletes of all time. In this book, he explores the modern media obsession with celebrity scandals and explains how Woods' travails and the culture of golf reflect broader American anxieties about race and sex, scapegoating and betrayal.

Starn is an avid golfer with a five handicap. He has written about golf for the Los Angeles Times and other newspapers and provided commentary on ESPN and NPR. A book signing will follow the reading.
The author talk takes place on Saturday, January 28 at 3 p.m., at the Main Library, 300 N. Roxboro St. For more information about the program, contact Joanne Abel at 560-0268. This program is sponsored, in large part, by Durham Library Foundation.
Durham County Library provides the entire community with books, services and other resources that inform, inspire learning, cultivate understanding and excite the imagination. For more information, visit your local library or visit us online at www.durhamcountylibrary.org.
