Downtown Durham Restaurants Support "Creek Week" March 17

Portion of Drink Specials to Support Keep Durham Beautiful

DURHAM, N.C. - Supporting cleaner waterways for Durham this year will be
as easy as dining out this Saturday thanks to a new partnership with
several downtown restaurants in honor of the Fourth Annual Creek Week.

New this year, several downtown Durham restaurants will partner with
Creek Week and Keep Durham Beautiful, Inc. to feature Creek Week
Specials. On Saturday, March 17, patrons to participating
establishments, including Bull City Burger and Brewery, Geer Street
Garden, Pinhook, and The Bar, can purchase the drink specials and the
restaurant will then donate $1 from each sale to benefit Keep Durham
Beautiful. Keep Durham Beautiful, a Creek Week partner, is a nonprofit
organization made up of volunteers whose mission is to engage and
inspire individuals to take greater responsibility for their community
environment.

If residents are tugging on boots and work gloves for cleanup activities
this year, Fullsteam Brewery is donating prizes to volunteers for their
efforts. "We are lucky to have business owners in downtown Durham who
value clean waterways and we are thankful that these restaurants are
willing to give back to their community by supporting beautification and
cleanup efforts," said Tania Dautlick, executive director of Keep Durham
Beautiful. "So, whether you're enjoying the drink specials or using your
elbow grease, there is a way for everyone to get involved in this year's
event."

This year's Creek Week, which will be held March 17-24, provides a
bounty of other opportunities for Durham residents to discover and
explore local streams and lakes through educational programs and
recreational activities, and to do their part to protect waterways
through volunteer projects. With the range of events offered, there is
something for everyone.

Residents can get outdoors and explore Durham's hidden nature gems by
canoe or kayak, or on foot via nature walks and hikes in beautiful
locations including Duke Forest, Eno River State Park and Sandy Creek
Park. Residents can bring their dogs to any of Durham's Dog Parks to
take the "Canines for Clean Water Pledge" to reduce pet waste. Other
events will showcase birds and butterflies, programs and nighttime
stories at the Durham County Library, as well as guided hikes and
paddles.

Each year, Creek Week also provides easy volunteer opportunities for
residents to connect individually or as a group with over a dozen
scheduled cleanup events at local creeks, marshes, streams and lakes
throughout Durham. Last year, 250 volunteers picked up over 10,000
pounds of trash from Durham waterways. This year's collected trash will
be removed by the Impact Team with the City's Neighborhood Improvement
Services Department. Residents can also volunteer by labeling storm
drains in their neighborhoods.

"Creek Week is a chance to appreciate creeks that are the lifeblood of
our community," said Laura Webb Smith, public education coordinator for
the Stormwater Services Division of the City's Public Works Department.
"Valuing clean water turns into concrete action with a cleanup or
educational nature walk. With so many opportunities to get involved this
year, ensuring Durham has clean waterways has never been easier."

Creek Week is a collaboration of organizations that manage, monitor,
protect, or promote area waterways including the City of Durham
Neighborhood Improvement Services, Parks and Recreation, Stormwater
Services Division with Public Works, and Water Management Departments
along with Durham County Government, Durham County Library, Durham Soil
& Water Conservation District, Ellerbe Creek Watershed, Eno River
Association, Frog Hollow Outdoors, Keep Durham Beautiful, Haw River
Assembly, New Hope Creek Corridor, North Carolina State Parks, and
Northeast Creek Stream Watch.
