Durham County Library Hosts LGBTQ Collection Day and Coming Out Panel

Program: Coming Out In the South
Date: Saturday, April 21
Time: Collection Day: 12 noon - 2 p.m.; Coming Out in the South Panel Discussion: 3 p.m.
Location: Main Library
                        300 N. Roxboro St.
Cost: Free and open to the public

About: The process of coming out as a LGBTQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgendered, queer) person - to oneself, parents, friends, relatives, coworkers and teachers - can be a varied experience - scary, affirming, challenging and transformative. Dr. Alexis Pauline Gumbs will moderate a panel of members of the LGBTQ community as they share their experiences of coming out in the South. The panel discussion is co-sponsored by the Pauli Murray Project, All of Us North Carolina and the Durham Human Relations Commission.

Dr. Alexis Gumbs has a PhD in English, Women's Studies and Africana Studies from Duke University. She is cofounder of the Mobile Homecoming Project and founder of the BrokenBeautiful Press.

The program will be preceded by a special collection period to accept materials related to LGBTQ history in Durham. Items of interest include photographs, posters and files from individuals and organizations, along with flyers and programs from local events. Back copies of publications like Feminary, The Newsletter and Around Our Triangle will be accepted. Materials are also sought regarding other topics of interest, including gay rights activism, concerts and bars, softball teams and women's organizations like the YWCA Women's Center, Triangle Area Lesbian Feminists, Lambda Youth Network and other youth groups and faith-based organizations such as MCC. These materials will be archived at the Durham County Library so that they may be preserved and accessible for future generations.
The collection period takes place on Saturday, April 21, from noon to 2 p.m. at the Main Library, 300 N. Roxboro St. The panel discussion will begin at 3 p.m.
For more information about the program, contact Joanne Abel at 919-560-0268.
