I'm disappointed the fracking bill passed this afternoon.  If you have time available to speak with your legislators, in person or on the phone, please try to make your voice heard before the vote occurs in the House?

·  Look up the names of your senator and representative. You'll find their office and phone numbers listed here.

Subject: Fracking Bill Passes Senate

All,

This afternoon the legislature passed a bill that moves North Carolina closer to fracking. The bill leaves environmental rule-making to an industry dominated Mining Commission, prohibits local control, and fails to protect groundwater standards. The bill passed 29-19.

Josh Stein was a true champion for us on the floor. He proposed an amendment that would have kept the ban on fracking and asked for more study from DENR. He eloquently pointed out that NC has enough natural gas to supply the US for 12 days. Is that enough to justify the risk to our land and water? If you have time you should send him a thank you email.

Also, Neil Hunt (R-Wake) stood up to his caucus and introduced an amendment to give local governments two addition seats on the Mining Commission. The provision failed, but Senator Hunt's action showed that he was willing to put our concerns before his party's. You can find his email here.

The bill will go to the House next week. We'll keep you updated.
