The City's Plan to Design a Better Bus Service Now in Place

Durham's plan to Design a Better Bus Service has received the green
light from the City Council. The plan is geared toward improving the
experience for current customers and attracting new ones. It's expected
to be implemented within three years, with the first changes being made
to the Bull City Connector in August. Transportation Department Director
Mark Ahrendsen explains how the plan hopes to make bus service better in
Durham in this episode of "City Hall This Week."

City Council Approves Parking Study for Downtown and Ninth Street

The City is working to make sure the parking it provides is keeping pace
with growth and revitalization in downtown and the Ninth Street areas.
The City Council approved a $229,606 contract for a Comprehensive
Parking Study to be conducted in those areas. The study will evaluate
whether the amount of public parking being provided is adequate because
a number of businesses rely on City parking for their livelihoods. The
study will also look at how parking can be managed and operated in a
more effective and customer-friendly way.

Significant Waterline Replacement Project Set to Get Underway in
Downtown

Another significant waterline replacement project is about to get
underway in downtown. The project will take place inside the downtown
loop south of Morgan Street and north of Ramseur Street. The waterlines
need to be replaced because a major portion of the infrastructure in the
area is nearing the end of its service life. At the same time, the
roads they are buried in are planned for streetscaping, resurfacing, and
realignment. To begin, $1.5 million will be spent to have an engineering
firm determine the location of existing utilities, prepare design plans,
and oversee construction.

Hear What "Durham Is Saying" About the City's Parks and Recreation
Activities

The 2011 Resident Satisfaction Survey shows high rankings for Durham's
Parks and Recreation services. Among the areas that scored the highest
were greenways and trails and cultural programming. Parks and Recreation
Department Director Rhonda Parker explains why that seems to be the
case, as well as what the City is doing to continue to improve in those
and other areas in this episode of "City Hall This Week."
