become fully informed about how the department operates. That's why it's
encouraging residents to apply for the 40th Citizens Police Academy. The
free six-week academy will take place August 28 - October 4. Officer

Department explains what participants in the academy will experience.
Neighborhoods Still Have Time to Participate in National Night Out
Neighborhoods wanting to participate in this year's National Night Out
events still have time to register. Events will be held in communities
throughout Durham on Tuesday, August 7. The night offers a chance for
neighborhoods to take a stand against crime and to give neighbors an
opportunity to get to know each other better. The deadline for
registration is July 9. Neighborhoods can register online at

Public Meeting to be Held on Proposed South Ellerbe Creek Wetland
Concept
The City wants to hear what residents have to say about the proposed
South Ellerbe Creek Wetland Concept plan. A public hearing will be held
on the plan at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, July 12 in the Council Chambers of
City Hall. The plan proposes changing the former Duke Diet and Fitness
Center site into a constructed wetland that would filter pollution from
stormwater runoff that accumulates from downtown Durham. Residents
unable to attend the meeting may leave comments at

ss.aspx.
Durham Celebrates National Park and Recreation Month
July is National Park and Recreation Month, and the City is sponsoring a
number of activities to encourage residents to get out and "Play More."
The month offers an opportunity for residents to become more aware of
the importance of their City parks and to learn more about what they
have to offer. Public Affairs Specialist Cynthia Booth with Durham Parks
and Recreation explains what activities will be taking place as part of
