About: Durham County Library welcomes Piedmont Laureate and playwright Ian Finley on Thursday, July 12 at 7 p.m. at the Main Library, 300 N. Roxboro St. Finley will discuss the origins of his writing and creative process for transforming the intricate details of historical sites or events into thought provoking theatrical works.

Hailing from the western part of the U.S., Finley studied at the University of Utah, and premiered You Can Say That Again: A Trio for Secretaries (KCATF 2001) and The Nature of the Nautilus (2002 Kennedy Center/Jean Kennedy Smith Award Winner). Written for a company of deaf actors, Nautilus was a work performed in American Sign Language, serving as Finley's first experience writing dramatic material intended to engage diverse communities in dialogue.

Finley received his MFA in Dramatic Writing from New York University's Tisch School of Performing Arts. In 2004, he relocated to Raleigh to serve as Director of Education at Burning Coal Theatre Company to teach playwriting, Shakespeare and theatre arts to students aged 7 to 70. A high point of Finley's work at the company was the 2009 premiere of his play, 1960. Over a five-year period, he worked with company members and conducted interviews with community members to craft its script exploring school desegregation in Raleigh. The premiere of 1960 took place in the restored Murphey School Auditorium - the very location where the desegregation vote had taken place 50 years before. His latest script, a two-part adaptation of Thomas Hardy's Jude the Obscure, premiered at Burning Coal in April 2012.
