About: North Carolina Botanical Director Dr. Peter White will lead a discussion regarding early botanists who explored the Carolinas on Saturday, September 15 at 3 p.m. at the Main Library, 300 N. Roxboro St. White will focus on these Quaker scientists and their influence on botany through their observations in North and South Carolina during the 16th and 17th centuries. Of special interest is Philadelphia's William Bartram, an explorer of the Southeast region during the period of early European settlement, when Native American civilizations and old-growth forests were part of the landscape.

White's talk will also feature stories of the Lost Colonies and John Lawson, author of A New Voyage to Carolina. Lawson, an explorer and naturalist, ventured to the Carolinas and travelled extensively between Pittsboro and Hillsborough in the early 1700s. Also well-known as a writer, Lawson intricately documented what he observed, providing a rich collection of historical records for today's scientists.
