First Quarter Crime Report Offers Encouraging News

The Durham Police Department's First Quarter Crime Report is offering
some encouraging news. Part One Index Crime, which is the total of
violent and property crimes, was down 4 percent in the first quarter.
That's a 14-year first quarter low. Chief Jose Lopez Sr. breaks the
numbers down even further.

City Council Approves Water and Sewer Rate Increase

Water and sewer customers in Durham will soon see a slight increase in
their water bills. The City Council approved an approximate 2.5 percent
overall increase effective July 1. The rates for outside-the-city
customers will continue at two times the inside-the-city rates. The
increase will help to cover operating costs, capital needs, and debt
service.

Stormwater Customers to See Rate Increase

Durham's stormwater customers will also be paying more effective July 1.
During its May 6 meeting, the City Council approved an 8.5 percent rate
increase. The increase is needed to help pay for stormwater retrofits to
comply with the Falls Lake and Jordan Lake existing development
requirements.

DATA Holds Public Input Sessions on Proposed Fare Increases

Additional funding is needed to help maintain the current level of
service for DATA customers. In order to come up with that money, the
City is considering a proposal to increase transit fares. Staff held a
public input session on May 1 to receive feedback on the proposal. A
second public meeting will be held on Tuesday, May 14 from 5 p.m. to 7
p.m. at Durham Station.
