Durham Hosts Environmental Educator Workshops July 13-16
Teachers to Learn New Approaches for Environmental Education; July 1 Registration Deadline

DURHAM, N.C. - Durham County and City of Durham staff are teaming up to offer environmental workshops for educators next month.

Project Learning Tree<https://www.plt.org/>, Project WET<http://www.projectwet.org/>, and Project Food, Land & People<http://www.foodlandpeople.org/> will be a part of this workshop series, which are nationally recognized curriculum guides aligned with state education standards. Teachers and informal educators, such as park rangers and scout leaders, will learn how to use hands-on activities in topics ranging from the water cycle to forest ecosystems to food.

According to Jennifer Brooks, soil conservationist and education coordinator with the Durham County Soil and Water Conservation District<http://dconc.gov/government/departments-f-z/soil-water-conservation-district>, nature-based education compliments students' classroom experience. "When kids can get outside and learn about the soil that grows their food and the water that supports all life, they feel empowered to make connections to local issues," Brooks said. "The concepts that students are learning in books come alive through the hands-on lessons we share in these workshops."

The workshops will be held from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Bahama Fire Department<https://www.facebook.com/pages/Bahama-Volunteer-Fire-Department/116254055070440> on Monday, July 13; Tuesday, July 14; and Thursday, July 16. On Wednesday, July 15, the group will meet at the Fews Ford Access at Eno River State Park<http://www.ncparks.gov/Visit/parks/enri/directions.php> from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The cost is $20 per workshop or $50 for all four days. The fee covers all workshop materials and participants should bring a bag lunch each day. Educators can also earn continuing education and environmental education certification credits.

Brooks is joined by facilitators from the City of Durham Water Management<http://durhamnc.gov/ich/op/dwm> and Public Works<http://durhamnc.gov/ich/op/pwd/Pages/Home.aspx> departments for these workshops. To register, educators should contact Brooks at (919) 560-0558 or by email<mailto:jbrooks at dconc.gov> by Wednesday, July 1.
